COVID-19 Reenergizes Truck Size/Weight Battle

A coalition that includes owner-operators, large trucking companies and the freight railroads is looking to head off renewed efforts to permanently raise national truck size standards in the wake of COVID-19. The Coalition Against Bigger Trucks (CABT) asserts that it is not opposed to the raising of weight limits by individual states aimed at making it easier for shippers and carriers to move essential freight during the pandemic.

FMCSA Extends COVID-19 Emergency Declaration for Trucking

CDC Issues Long-Haul Trucker COVID-19 Guidelines

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued guidelines tailored to help long-haul truck drivers and their employers deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of the guidelines repeat the disease prevention recommendations that have been in place for the general public for months: social distancing, hand-washing and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). But specific details aimed at truck drivers on the road and away from home for days underscore the potential for the virus to spread through the supply chain.

Truckers Suffer Colossal Coronavirus Job Losses in April

The U.S. lost a record amount of jobs in April with the coronavirus pandemic in full-swing, and the trucking industry was among thosesuffering massive losses. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the truck transportation sector had 1,523,900 employees as of March. In April, that figure had dropped to 1,435,600. That is equal to a loss of 88,300 positions.

‘Mayday’ Protest Underway at Nation’s Capitol as Truckers Protest Low Rates

A convoy of around 70 small-business truckers convoyed to the nation’s Capitol around 2:30 a.m. on Friday, May 1, to protest low freight rates amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
